I’m pretty in on Luca and all of his gracelessness and lack of subtlety but I found it almost intolerable here. Zero interest in exploring, well, anything, beyond their superficial markers and a refusal to let almost anything sit in discomfort. The rare moments of quiet introspection are a reprieve, both from the lunkheaded, monotonous conversations and Luca’s shocking lack of style. They’re the only grace notes of any attempt at vision and thus, the film at its best. Julia Roberts is great, to be expected. Unexpected is how unwatchable Michael Stuhlbarg is. Love the guy but his tap dancing in and out of the movie quickly wore thin. And poor Ayo Edebiri. The central conflict revolves entirely around her, and yet the script just leaves her out to dry at almost every turn. A very good actor left adrift by a bad part. Not great.
