Has all the hallmarks of a first feature with a young filmmaker TRYIN IT ALL OUT but luckily Ronan Day Lewis has access to one of the greatest living actors + two other greats so this all evens out to something utterly compelling. If nothing else, this looks spectacular and the score is a real barnburner. As great as DDL is in this (playing more modern than you’re used to seeing him too. DDL in a windbreaker and shades is a funny image to wrap your head around), I enjoyed the quieter moments most. There’s a real power to the silence between these brothers who share a lifetime of unspoken pain. I also really dug how this plays as a parallel to digging DDL out of his own hibernation. Oddly, a much better text on being the looming star of the world you occupy and how that’s irreparably fucked your entire orbit than the other movie sharing festival space, Jay Kelly.
A ton to like here, as sloppy as it all is.
