Special in so many ways but for me, it’s her ability to place you within each moment through hyper specific textures on screen and the sounds the emit. It’s one of the more stunning portrayals of memory loss I’ve ever seen. Kathleen Chalfant is remarkable. The heavy scenes are excruciating but the moments where Ruth is living within a constructed scene that her deteriorating mind has created are kind of astounding. It’s like she’s scripting bits of memory that only make sense to her. A layered gift of a performance, those brief flickers of understanding what’s happening to her just obliterating you because of it.
