I’m of two minds on this, on one hand, I wish this were a touch more transgressive both in image and willingness to let go of the schmaltz, on the other, maybe the transgression is simply in mainstreaming S&M into a straight up romcom. Either way, I think this balances out into something quite lovely, if lacking bite. The final image of Skarsgard, who’s excellent in this, is devastating. Was yearning for more of that. Pretty good! Could’ve been great.
