Less moved by this than I’ve been by Anderson in the past, but formally, I found it thrilling. Large chunks feel like he’s attempting to make an action film, and it rocks. The fight between Del Toro and Cumberbatch is some of the most exciting stuff he’s done. I think it’s ok that this one feels as slight as it gets for him narratively and thematically when he’s aiming for something much more dynamic visually. It’s like an extended Chuck Jones short. Del Toro is immediately one of the best leads he’s had.
